POLICE IN KANO ARREST WHATSAPP GROUP ADMIN & 2 MEMBERS IN FAKE NEWS SHARE CASE
When we published the piece about social media group Admins getting arrested for one fake post or another on DesignWorld INT'L, last year August 24, 2017 to be exact, following a report shared from a Kenyan news outlet, many of you ignored it.
Their belief is Nigeria is too lawless for that to happen here, so they continued with their social media misinformation, hate speech, fake news, fabrications and libelous postings and sharing unperturbed.
Well, it is only one year ago and now we have our very first case of arrest and detention in Kano of 3 individuals, a male social media group Admin and 2 female members, who shared an unverified, unconfirmed information about an alleged crime of kidnapping.
Investigations by the Kano Kidnapping Squad of the Nigerian Police as informed by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Musa Magaji Majiya revealed that the suspect, a female health worker was completely innocent of the allegations.
Subsequently, the female member who first shared the false information was arrested along side two others, another female as well as the group Admin, a male who claimed he was even unaware of the post, when it was shared and by who.
All 3 are now being held by the police pending conclusion of their investigations. There could be more arrests. This is possibly the first time such an arrest is taking place involving the sharing of fake news or hate speech in Kano. It surely will not be the last.
A video of the victim and prime suspects being interviewed by journalists has gone viral and is serving as further warning to all to beware of what they say, write, share, post, distribute etc on social media platforms. It could truly get you into serious trouble.
Perhaps, you would believe it now that it has happened in a place near you.
