KWANKWASO'S BIGGEST POLITICAL CAREER MISTAKE …By Tijjani Muhammad Musa

Ex Kano State Governor and now Kano Central Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso's most devastating career miscalculation, which has since set his political prominence spiraling downward happened in 2014 APC Presidential Primaries in which President Muhammad Buhari emerged winner.

In the said in-house election, APC delegates representing every ward and states of the country gathered during their National Convention and chose Buhari as their Presidential Flag Bearer for the then upcoming, now historic 2015 Elections, which toppled the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan as well as the ruling party, PDP.

Kwankwaso came a distant second, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who was among the contestants emerged a dismal third despite all the underground political moves, negotiations and exchange of money, some in hard currencies by those who trusted and believed in money politics.

Now, after that disappointing failure on the part of now sobered by defeat Kwankwaso, what some analysts expect from such a much bloated confidence politician and his followers was go back to the drawing table to review and reassess what happened in order to learn from their misfortunes.

The ex-Minister of Defense should have sat down with his inner caucus loyalists and come to the realization that the force (Buhari) they are contending with is either too strong for them to overcome or the time for such a confrontation is not in their favor and so should restrategize.

The Buhari popularity seems to be building up since he entered into the political arena. He has built up a followership that has steadily been increasing with each presidential bid since  2003. By the time he had given the presidency his third attempt in 2011, his voters base had surpassed the 12 million mark.

For any discerning and analytical mind, it was becoming obvious that if anybody could be growing the way Buhari was doing, without the political structure of the 16 years old ruling party as well as instruments of state or financial clout of the national government behind him, it was only a matter of time, before a hit will be recorded by such a person.

Kwankwaso should have tethered his ego and accept to take a step backward in order to take 10 steps forward. He should have immediately paid homage and allegiance to Buhari and offer his full support and loyalty to their party's Presidential flag bearer, courting his trust and acceptance, all in a calculated political strategy and repositioning.

He should have succumbed to superiority of purpose against self propagation of pride. By submitting to flow with the leader, albeit temporarily, he could have had his portion of the cake at stake. Being the force to reckon with in Nigerian politics that he is and coming from Buhari's political base Kano, then having such an impressive credentials, he could have established himself as the next man to trust after the phenomenal Buhari.

Once he so critically position himself, he could have his cut of political appointments, both for himself and his associates. And wherever the President goes he is likely to be included as part of the entourage. By constantly being in the happening circle of the President and state affairs, his presence would gradually be impressed upon many as the natural successor to Buhari when the old war horse eventually finishes his tenure.

Now, when Buhari goes in 2023, what will most likely happen is the south would want to take its turn in producing the country's next president. Southwest to be precise would produce a Yoruba president and the north would be called upon to provide the vice president. With Kwankwaso having served the country well and prominently too, he would be most befitting to occupy that lofty post.

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, current Vice President to Buhari has clearly proven himself with regards to decisively handling the affairs of the country as Acting President in the absence of President Muhammad Buhari could become the next president, floating the Christian ticket. Again Kwankwaso being a Muslim and from the north would naturally fill in as his Muslim ticket running mate.

As Vice President, Kwankwaso from his track records and antecedent as Kano State Governor, former Minister and so on would not be like Atiku Abubakar who spent 8 years as Obasanjo's Vice President or Namadi Sambo who spent 6 years as Jonatha's Deputy with virtually nothing to show as a legacies to the north, on both their parts.

Rabiu Kwankwaso would have further consolidated his growing political clout and relevance as to keep the president on his toes in all ramifications, so much so that many would begin to feel his dominant character in the presidency and once in a while perform the role of the president when requested to play acting president himself. It would only be a matter of time for all to recognize his full potential as the next Nigerian President.

Now, all this would not happen in the time frame Kwankwaso would want it to happen. Besides, he clearly lacks the requirements for such a development to come to pass. What could such basics, some might want to ask? Well, looking closely at the flow of events, it would take nothing less than 8 to 12 years for such a success story to be achieved. The man lacks the patience to wait for that to happen.

Also, for him to become president Kwankwaso must play a follower card first. Sadly, it is not among his stallion qualities to be found in that position at any time. He believes himself a leader and so would rather lead a pack of young goons or trudge a path all alone rather than follow any one, notwithstanding his superiority over and above him. His APC defection is a case to point at.

Again, with Kwankwaso it is either his way or no way. If he decides to do a thing, he takes full charge and will essentially deliver the goods no matter whose ox is gored or how mighty the toes he would step upon. A democracy player who is not democratic one bit when it comes to leadership qualities. Here too, many will find him at loggerhead with their interests.

But when it comes to progressing this nation forward, there is no doubt in me that he is a man who could achieve greatness for both himself and the country. Sadly, he has played his cards all wrong, so far. Perhaps, there's a way things could turn around for him, Allaahu A'lam. But for now, a gaskiya all odds seems to be against him.
