"ASHES TO ASHES, DUST TO DUST"

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

The death of Mandela was more celebrated than mourned
For such a great loss, that was a contradiction to the norm
When such legends pass on, heaven is known to be rent asunder
A huge shooting star is registered to cross the earth's horizon
But not so, in the case of one of the most recognized icon of 21C
Death gave enough notice that it was coming for Rolihlahla
So much so, the sudden shock an event of such magnitude generates
Was absent when mankind lost one more strand of its civility
When the moment came and the man passed, voices were raised
Not in painful cries of sorrow, but in songs of celebrations
For a life well spent, fulfilled, under the spotlight of history
Kings and Queens, the rich and poor all queued to pay homage
But tears were scarce, only praises as he was finally lowered
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, ends another amazing journey
Once again proving true, known or unknown, the sun sets on all.

LUSTROUS PEARLS, LUSCIOUS TOMATOES

...by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

Beauties are all over the place now
While some are made in the womb
Others are purchased off a shelf
But how long does true beauty
Or the applied "beauty" last?

At the peak of their imaging
Everything's so firm and full
Most think it'll last for eternity
One often wonder what gives them
Such false notion that beauty lasts

But, alas the bubble finally burst
Revealing the same servings
Served all youths through time
Only, lessons are never learnt
That physical beauty never last?

Young, beautiful, lustrous pearl
Reminds of fresh ripe luscious tomato
It comes off green and matures red
Shining beautifully, so full of itself
So adorable, guilt covers the first slice

Best thing that can happen to it though
To be used for a mouth watering meal
Be it for a veggie salad or to enrich a soup
Otherwise, it glitters to a tasteless waste
Given a day or two, perhaps just three

A shrivel, a tear, then a white spot
Tell-tale that the fame is over now
Fit only for the delight of tiny wings
Together they fly into the trash bin
And they too soon abandon the lurch

Whoever uttered the wise saying first
"Bow out when the ovation is loudest"
How many heed that from the rest
As another green tomato set to bloom
Dare to ask it, "How long does beauty last?"

"O, oh!" Hold on. For, here we go again!

BEAUTIFUL LAST ONLY A MOMENT

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

One often can't help
But wonder why

Beautiful women
Who are so, so fly

Are never seen
Wiping off a sigh

For the good
Of a sad heart nearby

Or perhaps to them
The price of time is too high

Often too busy
Self-pampering their thy

Maintaining, preserving
Their attractive thigh

Indulging in their charms
Bouying them afloat in the sky

For the next king
So, they can't afford a hi

Till they loose it all to gray
For not longer than eating a pie

How long is that
A minute or just a while?

Not long thereafter
They don't mind it in a penthouse or a pigsty

THE DOVE'S CRY

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

The bus is full and the journey has commenced
The driver is the one in total control now
There are various passengers on the ride
It is commonplace for some to pray
Others simply trust in the driver
One or two'd ignore and be non-chalant
Some would sleep with their mouth open
A few read their mags, newspapers, novels
First time travellerslook out to enjoy the scenery
Regulars engage in gossips, conversations and more
While one or two pay rapt attention to the road ahead

They really do not care about any but themselves
They are not the driver, but equally watch the roads
Through the vehicle's screen with more fear and agitations
Often panicking and alerting the "cool headed" driver
Who assures them that there is nothing to worry about
But, instinctively they know there is and so are vigilant

There of course is the disheveled and dingy bus conductor
With a very foul mouth, who often would shout down any
Who express fears about how the driver is performing
That is his job, very often self-imposed to please his master

But, how often the news is read to the rest of the world
About an accident in which all in the vehicle have perished
Except an innocent child or two
Is this making some sense?

Many would say, that "mad, crazy, selfish" person
Who was cautioning the driver is being too worried
He should relax and enjoy the ride, just like others
Luckily another might add his concern to the agitation
Then another and another and another and one other
Soon the non-chalant, sleepers, readers, gossippers
Get disturbed from their preferred engagements

They would each get involved, help restore normalcy
So, they can continue enjoying their travel past time
For it is mostly when many or almost all in the ride
The passengers become wary of the dangers
And they appeal to the driver to do the right thing
That the sojourn would be safe, each arriving their destinations
And thus tell the story of a nostalgic golden experience

"Kukan kurciya jawabi ne... (The Dove's Cry is a message...)
Mai hankali ke ganewa. (Only the wise understands it)

NELSON MANDELA DISHONORED @ HIS LAST HONORING

Heard on the radio last night that the Sign Language interpreter at the Nelson Mandela funeral was a fake. The association for the deaf and dumb in South Africa have expressed their dismay at the gross disrespect upon their whole lot. This goes to show how confident fraud is fast becoming in this world. What audacity!  Can just imagine, at a world gathering like that, for such a monumental occassion! If it were in Nigeria, I'd understand and it'd be acceptable. Yes, we've tarnished our image to that despicable point.  But, in South Africa? With all these important guys in attendance and at the funeral of one of the most important figure in modern day global village Nelson Mandela?  This is unforgivable!

NUDITY IS NOW IN VOGUE

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

I am a witness that
The end of time has begun
And nudity of the mind, body and soul is now vogue

I am ashamed that
Man has stooped so low
As to go back to being a beast in 21c

I am daunted that
Parents, many, are no more that
But abusers of innocence

I am worried that
The young, our future are taking
To immorality and materialism

I am disturbed that
The politicians are disgracefully
Exploiting of their people's trust

I am lamenting that
Freedom of speech is used
As a means to cause disharmony

I am sad that
Liberties are misunderstood
To mean oppressing a fellow human

I am appalled that
Justice is for sale at a price
Only the guilty can afford

I am angry that
Man is allowing racism deny him
The joy of joy, of cultural discovery

I am shocked that
Man is the most intelligent of all
Yet, busy destroying his civilization

I am uncomfortable that
The world is deliberately being steered
Towards onerous chaos and anarchy

I am so discouraged that
The future seems bleak despite
All the inventions, progress man is making

I am amazed that
We can read and write
But, yet can not think and understand

I am perturbed that
Darkess came before light. But look
We are now heading back to pre-history

Instead of advancing towards brilliance
The accursed is winning, taking all but a few
Can the wise save his soul and just one other?

DOING YOUR OWN THING

Written by Tijjani Muhammad Musa

Wow! What a day!

I woke up at dawn, 4:45am or thereabout and prayed the Fajr Salat.

Then donned my training kit and went for my weekend football game with our local club at a primary school nearby. By the way, did I inform you that we recently thrashed another club of younger boys who thought we could not measure up to them by 4 goal to 1? :) In fact, one of them promised his team a hat-trick against us or else he'd stop playing football for life. He lied and failed just like all liars do... Hehehehehe. Another boasted that they'll beat us by 6 goals to nothing. Naaah!

Then, as the game was about to start, one of our boys teased the referee that there are 12 of us againsttheir 11. Before the ref could answer, a striker of the opposing team interrupted, saying to the ref, "We are ok with that! Allow them, allow them! In fact, we permit them to add 1 more player, making their squad 13 against or our 11" and ran off full of enthusiasm. Well, they left the pitch with their tails between their legs! Pwuahahahahahaha!

After the training session, I went to our company sounds recording studio, The 3rd Millenium Studio and finished editing a special one hour packaged program about Freedom Radio 99.5FM 10th Year Anniversary. May be some of you guys heard it? It aired between 2:15-3:15pm. The first independent privately owned FM station in Northern Nigeria i.e. Freedom Radio, Kano just clocked 10 years of existence on December 1st, 2013. Our media organization SoundWord & Sight Communications Nigeria Limited was part of that journey as collaborative partners and so the need on our part to tell our side of the story.

Just when I was due to zap to Freedom House with the produced cd, an unexpected (this is Sunday) call was made for me to come to one of my construction sites by a client and supervise a piece of masonery works for a foundation being executed. Got there, briefly gave instructions and immediately took off for the radio house at Sharada like a bat out of hell as the popular saying goes.

Upon arrival, had the anniversary program aired and there after returned to the building site where I had to supervise the works to its correct construction specifications. Paid the workers and by then it was Magrib prayer time. Prayed at a mosque within the vicinity, then gave one of the labourers a lift as he was going towards my direction. Finally arrived home, famished. I was presented with my breakfast, what was left of my lunch and dinner. Hehehehe. The only meal I've had the opportunity of taking all day long was a fruit serving of bananas, oranges and water melon and that was by 4-5pm.

By the time I ate, all I could do is waste myself on the bed and barely got up to go and observe the Isha' salat. And when I returned and flopped back on the bed, the next time I woke up, it was my pressured bladder and the call to another Subh prayer that did it.

Typical day of a man doing his own thing... And alhamdulilLaah, I love it.

THE NIGHT STANDER

... Written by Tijjani Muhammad Musa

One of the most open secrets that many fail to take advantage of is night standing, in salat. The benefits are so immense that they can not be quantified. Qiyamal layl as it is popularly called is recommended by Allaah Subhanahu Wa Ta'alah in several verses in the Quran, thus:

“They (the believers) forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope; and they spend out of what We have bestowed on them.” Soorah as-Sajdah 32: 16

“They (the pious) used to sleep but little at night.” Soorah ath-Thariyat (51): 17

And Allah's Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “The best prayer after those prescribed is (the prayer performed) in the depth of night.” [Saheeh Muslim and Musnad Ahmad]

Again in another hadith, he (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) also said: “The most beloved prayer to Allah was of Dawud (alaihi as-salaam). He slept one half of the night, got up (and prayed) for one third, and then slept (the remaining) one sixth.” [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]

Numerous are the benefits of such night standing. We will mention them briefly; it protects one from satan, facilitates supplication acceptance, brings one close to Allah, is a means of earning Allah's Mercy and doing it regularly instill discipline in the night stander. However, the details of these are not what we want to highlight in this piece.

The similitude of the one who stands in the middle of the night for prayers, while others sleep is like that of a person in a place where water is extremely scarce, coming from one singular source during the day and at night. It runs free, undisturbed, non-stop whether it is collected or not. From this one source, everybody gets his daily supply of the precious liquid.

Many are the persons in the populace that need it and so they scramble, stampede and even fight for it. Some hurting themselves and each other in the process, loosing so much respect and becoming disgraceful while at it.

For those who choose to ignore collecting it that way, for free, in an effort to maintain their status and dignity, end up using their resources to purchase it at a very exorbitant price. And the need for this life companion resource is daily and so the demand for it is endless.

Now, on days the water comes in trickles or even briefly gets witheld from its one source, many who have not saved and stored their excess or extra for the proverbial rainy day, and can not afford to buy it at its costly offering tag end up begging, stealing, robbing or even killing for it.

But, for the man or woman who stands before his or her Lord, all alone in prayers in the midst of the night, it is like one who is at the water source, alone, when the water is at its purest, undisturbed flow, with no one else to struggle, compete or hinder his or her bountiful collection.

He first uses the water for his immediate satisfaction, then to meet all his daily needs and fetches some more, filling all his containers and finally letting it run to fill his underground reservoir.

By the time it is dawn and the first soul stirs back to life, he or she is fully done. And when the sun is up and the heat is on, the fetchers queue up, stretching and snaking far and long till the eyes can see.

Soon, patience starts to run out and words of anger and annoyance starts to criss-cross, before the ultimate grand finalé, the daily fistful engagements. The night stander watches pitifully and smile at their desperations.

All his calls for people to be orderly, falls on no ears. Where they do, deaf ears. And his sincere advice for self-sufficiency is unheeded and so the saga continues. Many wonder though how he is never seen in want of what they know everybody needs.

Interesting, isn't it?

So, be you a Night Stander.

DON'T MIND THE PROF, DO NOT COMMIT SUICIDE

... by Tijjani Muhammad Musa

A Rejoinder to Professor Noel Ignatiev's PROGRESSIVE PROFESSOR URGES WHITE MALE STUDENTS TO COMMIT SUICIDE DURING CLASS - By Ivan Fernando

I just came on board my Facebook wall and commenced browsing downward to see what new is happening and catch up on what I've missed. Suddenly I saw this heading: PROGRESSIVE PROFESSOR URGES WHITE MALE STUDENTS TO COMMIT SUICIDE DURING CLASS and my interest and curiousity was activated. Who could be so bold, making this very serious, not-so-palatable statement and directing it to the whites? Habaa!

So I clicked on the title which combined as a link to arrive at a website - Diversity Chronicle and the bold and brazen interview of the Professor who made that euthanistic suggestion.

These are some of the shocking things he had to say in response to questions asked by Ivan Fernando, which made the title simply a child's play... Hear him:

“If you are a white male, you don’t deserve to live. You are a cancer, you’re a disease, white males have never contributed anything positive to the world! They only murder, exploit and oppress non-whites! At least a white woman can have sex with a black man and make a brown baby but what can a white male do? He’s good for nothing" - Professor Noel Ignatiev

Obviously, all whites need to be destroyed, but why not start with white males? They are behind most of history’s greatest atrocities. - Professor Noel Ignatiev

Eventually white women can breed out, but my feeling is that if you are a white male, you should kill yourself now. If you are a thoughtful person, with a social consciousness who considers himself white, you will consider suicide. It’s the right thing to do. - Professor Noel Ignatiev

No one has committed violence, genocide and dispossession on the level of white males. The whole purpose of white male culture is to perpetuate their privileged status and continue their oppression of non-whites.  - Professor Noel Ignatiev

Whites don’t have a culture like other races in which traditions and customs are preserved as an expression of a common identity. White culture is an entirely economic and social culture which is about shutting out other people deemed “non-white” as a means of preventing their social and economic advancement! In other words all of ‘white culture’ so-called, stems from hatred of the other, unlike other ethnicities which do have cultures. -  Professor Noel Ignatiev

Eventually, I would like to put white males in concentration camps and work them to death just like they’ve done to everyone else. When they are all dead we can throw a party and dance around their corpses! - Professor Noel Ignatiev

Slavery, genocides against aboriginal peoples and massive land confiscation, the inquisition, the holocaust, white males are all to blame! You maintain your white male privilege only by oppressing, discriminating against and enslaving others!” - Professor Noel Ignatiev

White people are a disease, they are parasites! They don’t deserve to live!  - Professor Noel Ignatiev

You can read the full article via this link: http://diversitychronicle.wordpress.com/2013/11/18/progressive-professor-urges-white-male-students-to-commit-suicide-during-class/

Though it might sound ok to some people and the points he raised as his reasons for such a call on all white males might be true or can not be disputed to most, if not all non-whites, still it is not the best things to say to any one person or group of people, not to talk of a whole race.

Islamically, we are not to ever suggest clearly or disguisedly that any one should commit suicide, no matter how grevious or unforgivable are his or her atrocities. And yes, I know the Professor is expressing his candid opinion, based on reasons best known to him and that it has nothing to do with anything spiritual or religious, but as a Muslim one must always consider and analyze whatever we come across through the prism of our faith.

In Quran Allaah SWT Says:

Q4:110 - And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself, but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Q12:87 - And never give up hope of Allah's Mercy. Certainly no one despairs of Allah's Mercy, except the people who disbelieve."

Q4:29 - And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.

And the Prophet, Muhammad SAWS said:

"None of you should Wish for death because of a calamity befalling him; but if he has to Wish for death, he should say: "O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me.' " - Bukhari Volume 7, Book 70, Number 575 Narrated by Anas bin Malik

"And none of you should Wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah." - Bukhari Volume 7, Book 70, Number 577 Narrated by Abu Huraira

So, based on the foregoing extracts from both the Quran and Hadith, it is ill-adviced to suggest to anyone to kill himself or herself just because of his unimaginable sins and crimes. Nor should anybody incline towards committing suicide, no matter how undescribable are his or her evil doings.

Rather, the person should turn to Allaah SWT and seek for forgiveness. As humans, we are not perfect and are full of errors in our actions and reactions. But in Allaah, let any who has hope for the best of a future, turn.

ANGOLA! THERE IS NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE

Written by Tijjani Muhammad Musa

Let nobody think the worldwide concern and interest generated by the controversial Angolan ban on Islam and its subsequent denial by their Foreign embassy in Washington DC was a waste of time. Actually it was not a waste.

There's no smoke without fire. If there was no ban or something similar, then what started the "rumour"? To the point of even quoting some highly placed government officials. Ai biri ya yi kama da mutum. We are just letting anybody know that just because Angolan Muslims are a minority there, none should think of even remotely denying them of their fundamental human right to freely worship.

Even the majority Angolan Christian population are all not followers of the same denomination. Some are Catholics, Protestants, Anglicans, Baptists, Pentacostal etc. Remember, this is Africa, so I'm sure there are traditional religion practitioers. And of course there must be atheists, satanists, cultists, free thinkers etc, so it is not possible that all except the 5% Muslims in Angola are non-Christians.

So, let each individual choose to worship whatever he or she willingly prefer. Also 16 million Angolans, less the 5% Muslims there can not obliterate the 1.8 billion Muslim Ummah (nation) worldwide! This is because the religion of those 5% Muslim Angolans is a small pinch off the growing global Islamic movement.

And if that is allowed to happen, then all minority faiths, cults, movements or simple ideological fraternities worldwide are doomed. But, be rest assured Islam would not be among them. This is because it is the fastest growing religion in the world and currently occupying the No.1 position even above the collective Christian population as devotional faith.

Looking closely at this, it is actually a concern not about or for Islam, but a worry about humanity and wherever the word 'Minority' would show itself. Even the majority worldwide as this very case typically demonstrates, could be a minority somewhere else. There are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Krishnan, Marxist, etc minorities else where. Whereas in other countries, regions or continents, these very same religious followings could each be a majority. Therefore, it is tolerance and accomodating our differences that would see us progress as mankind. Not barbarism. Definitely, not this.

So, it is gross stupidity and absolute retardation of the mind, body and soul for any to remotely, even in a dream, think like that. The person or nation must be a psychopathic case.

THE ANGOLAN MIND

This is a series of Haiku Poems written by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip" as inspired by the controvercial Angola's ban on Islam (http://www.dhakatribune.com/africa/2013/nov/26/angola-bans-islam-shuts-mosques), which sensationalize the internet during the 3rd weekend of November 2013 via some websites.

In response to the scandalous news, a Haiku poem titled ANGOLA BANS LIGHT was first penned and posted on Facebook by Poetic Tee and it reads thus:

ANGOLA BANS LIGHT

Angola bans light
Choosing to dwell in darkness
For how long? Poor souls.

This inspired other poets to immediately start expressing their dismay at the unpleasant news. While condemnations poured out from different individuals and sources for such a fundamental human rights violation by Angola, the series were penned down and scheduled to further reinforce the outrage.

The Haiku poems are 21 in number and were published one after another on both my Facebook wall and Twitter account. They are a representation of the mind of Angola as it took the unfortunate decision without considering the possible consequences of such a rule. Similar scenerios are presented to The Angolan Mind and its reaction to them are expressed along the ban on Islam path to show how impossibly inhumane the decision was.

It was while the 13th piece was  posted that another Breaking News was made stating that Angola has denied banning Islam in their country via this link: http://www.ibtimes.com/angola-denies-it-banned-islam-destroyed-mosques-1484898.

Below are the Haiku Series aptly titled THE ANGOLAN MIND.  Enjoy the read, then reflect on them please...

THE DEVIL'S FAVORITE FLAME

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

Come, let me tell you a fine story
That might set your mind go aflurry

This is about a man of envious fame
Better still the Devil's favourite flame

He choses him with a sieve and care
Befitting a task full of charms and flare

Young, strong, handsome and hung
Muscle packed, tight and strung

Irresistible smile that causes a swoon
Neither of the blue nor the silver spoon

Most eloquent, what a cute thriller
At his peak, simply a lady-dazzler

A master playboy with no time for love
Only for tracing his fingers over a curve

A dozen and a half, just for a smile
Vanquished hearts queue for a mile

Fair, tall, slim, subtle, almost self-made
At his beck and call, they simply parade

Craving only for a brief glance
Lucky star in a moonlight dance

Beauties on the menu? Press "Play"
Many a heart, he shatters and spray

By the seconds, minutes of the hour
Enchanting, charming, bees to flower

Rivers of tears fit for a record swim
Oceans of pains, foams get a skim

The devil's exciting and tempting game
Time celebrating his fame and blame

The day dragged on 36 hours endless
Until the hour-glass drained off sandless

At twilight when the sun heat's a flint
An angel floats-by catching his squint

Mersmerizing, intoxicating, fully on offer
In full glory, scented rose dare its sniffer

Transparent, soft and delicate of mould
Fingers failed to lift, to touch and to hold

Slouched, wrinkled and frail of bones
Barely audible, in wavering monotones

The day's over for this former hot ember
Another found? January to December

Come, let me tell you another fine story
That might again set your mind go aflurry...

LOVERS HEAVEN

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

Lovers are a mystique
Lost in a maze, together
And wish not to ever
To be found
To be freed, to be rescued
Nor pray to find a way

Lovers only want one thing
Each other's presence
They crave only themselves
To hear love's word
See love smile, feel as one
Nothing more, nobody else

Even time fear lovers' in-love
For it stands still, mute
In their presence
Their hunger and thirst
Are imprisoned
Each time two becomes one

Their minds is preoccupied
With each other's thoughts
24/7
Breathing each other
Thinking one another
Whisper and touch, the other

They sleep and dream
Wake and daydream each other
Lovers don't need eyes to see
All they need's a sense to feel
With which they see what
Loveless souls fail to see

It is those outside
Their circle of love
That see faults
Flaws, wrongs, mistakes
Lovers see only
2 hearts beating, as one

Lovers don't feel
The heat of fire
Or the sun scorching
They notice not
Coldness of the winter
Or its breeze wallowing

The dry, hot, torchy
And bristly desert wind
Blows cool against lovers
Tendering their skins
"Stay me love, stay"
Lovers would beg

And the wetness of rain
Does nothing but flowers
Fragrances and blossoms
Lovers intimate intimacy
With each drenched drop
Lovers love springs

In their own love
Nurtured "eco-system"
There is no atmosphere
No weather nor seasons
Only harmonized body heat
Even if miles or worlds apart

In a lovers heaven
Our world in turmoil
Full of no tomorrow
Is a cold war game
With no cold and no war
Only their game.

My ability to reveal through poems my innermost feelings, observations, reflections, understandings, thoughts and so on about life, its simplicity and intricacies has indulged my interest further in poetry, making me hungry for knowing more about this amazing literary art. A form of expression that is very very powerful indeed, most especially when it comes to emotional, phylosophical, logical, mystical and spiritual revelations.

In the course of my rumaging, I came across this educative piece dealing with the different types of poetic expressions and found it so valuable, the urge to share it overwhelmed me. Thus, this post... Hope, you find it as enriching as I did.

HAIKU

Many people have heard about haiku. In fact, most of us are instructed at one point or another-usually in elementary school or high school-to write one of our very own. Even if you did that, do you remember what this type of poem actually is?

Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry which is composed of three non rhyming lines. The first and third lines have five syllables each and the second line has seven syllables. They often express feelings and thoughts about nature; however, you could write a poem about any subject that you would like to in this form. Perhaps the most famous Haiku is Basho's Old Pond:

Furuike ya
kawazu tobikomu
mizu no oto

Translated, this poem reads:
The old pond
a frog jumps in,
sound of water.

PASTORAL

One of the poetic favorites is pastoral poetry because it elicits such wonderful senses of peace and harmony. Examples of this form include Keats' Ode on a Grecian Urn , which is also a type of ode. A stanza of this poem reads:

Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness,
Thou foster-child of Silence and slow Time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leaf-fringed legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
What men or gods are these?
What maidens loth?
What mad pursuit?
What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels?
What wild ecstasy?

Like the haiku, nature is often at the center of these types of poems as well. In general, pastoral poetry will focus on describing a rural place, but the terms will be peaceful and endearing. You will feel at ease after reading these types of poems.

Many pastoral poems are written about shepherds. They are written as a series of rhyming couplets.

TERZA RIMA

You might be able to get some sort of sense of what this poetry encompasses just by looking at the name of it. The lines in these types of poems are arranged in what are called "tercets."

What this means is the lines come in groups of threes. That does not mean that the poem is only three lines long. There can be multiple groups of three lines. Like the haiku, there are certain syllable requirements, as most poems written in terza rima have lines of 10 or 11 syllables.

The Italian poet Dante created this form, and his Divine Comedy is one of the best-known examples of the form. A stanza of this poem reads:

His glory, by whose might all things are mov'd,
Pierces the universe, and in one part
Sheds more resplendence, elsewhere less. In heav'n,
That largeliest of his light partakes, was I,
Witness of things, which to relate again
Surpasseth power of him who comes from thence;
For that, so near approaching its desire
Our intellect is to such depth absorb'd,
That memory cannot follow. Nathless all,
That in my thoughts I of that sacred realm
Could store, shall now be matter of my song.

BALLAD

Are you familiar with the term "ballad"? You probably are, because people sometimes refer to songs-particularly romantic ones-as ballads. In fact, ballad poems are frequently sung-or at least they are intended to be sung-and they are often about love. Often, these ballads will tell stories and they tend to be of a mystical nature. As a song does, ballads tend to have a refrain that repeats at various intervals throughout.

Guido Cavalcanti's Ballad and Sir Walter Raleigh's As You Came from the Holy Land both demonstrate the musical quality of the ballad. An excerpt from Raleigh's poem can be seen here:

As you came from the holy land
Of Walsinghame,
Met you not with my true love
By the way as you came?
How shall I know your true love,
That have met many one,
As I went to the holy land,
That have come, that have gone?

IMAGERY

We decided to place a focus on imagery poems because of the immense power that they possess. Many, many poems can be classified as imagery poems; however, some are better at the task than others. Individuals who often write imagery-based poems are known as Imagists.

William Carlos Williams' short poem The Red Wheelbarrow is a famous example of a short imagist poem:

so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens.

These types of poems work to draw a picture in the mind of the reader, in order to give an extremely powerful image of what the writer is talking about. They work to intensify the senses of the reader.

LIMERICK

A limerick is a poem that is often silly or whimsical, written in five lines with an AABBA rhyme scheme. Often, limericks tell a short, humorous story. These types of poems have been popular for hundreds of years, particularly in the English language.

When limericks first became popular, they often expressed ideas that were crude and off-color but today, limericks express all sorts of ideas. The form of the limerick was made popular by a British poet named Edward Lear in the 1800s, whose limericksMoften started off: There once was or There was. Some of his limericks include There was an Old Man with a Nose and There was a Young Lady of Dorking , which goes like this:

There was a Young Lady of Dorking,
Who bought a large bonnet for walking;
But its colour and size,
So bedazzled her eyes,
That she very soon went back to Dorking.

EPIC POEM

One of the longest types of poems is known as the epic poem, which has been around for thousands of years. Technically a type of narrative poem, which tells a story, epic poems usually tell the story of a mythical warrior and the great things that he accomplished in all of his journeys such as The Odyssey and The Iliad.

Epic poetry began as folk stories that were passed down from generation to generation, which were then later written into long form. One of the oldest epic poems is actually one of the oldest pieces of written literature in the world. It is called the Epic of Gilgamesh and dates back to 1800 BC. The start of this epic (with the translater's (?) notes) reads:

He who has seen everything, I will make known (?) to the lands.
I will teach (?) about him who experienced all things, ... alike,
Anu granted him the totality of knowledge of all.
He saw the Secret, discovered the Hidden, he brought information of (the time) before the Flood.
He went on a distant journey, pushing himself to exhaustion, but then was brought to peace.
He carved on a stone stela all of his toils, and built the wall of Uruk-Haven,the wall of the sacred Eanna Temple, the holy sanctuary.

ELEGY

Because poems can express a wide variety of emotions, there are sad forms of poetry as well as happy ones. One of these sad forms is known as an elegy.

Elegies express a lament, often over the death of a loved one. This makes elegies especially popular for funerals. Some elegies are written not only to be read out loud; they can be put to music and sung.

Tennyson's In Memoriam is an elegy to a close friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, and was written over twenty years:

Strong Son of God, immortal Love,
Whom we, that have not seen thy face,
By faith, and faith alone, embrace,
Believing where we cannot prove;
Thine are these orbs of light and shade;
Thou madest Life in man and brute;
Thou madest Death; and lo, thy foot
Is on the skull which thou hast made.

FREE VERSE

While it is easy to think that poems have to rhyme, free verse is a type of poetry that does not require any rhyme scheme or meter. Poems written in free verse, however, do tend to employ other types of creative language such as alliteration, words that begin with the same sound, or assonance, the repetition of vowel sounds.

Some people find free verse to be a less restrictive type of poetry to write since it doesn't have to employ the form or the rhyming schemes of other types of poetry.

The free verse form of poetry became popular in the 1800s, and continues to be popular among poets even to this day. TS Eliot was one of the masters of the form, as best seen in his poems The Waste Land and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, which begins:

Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming questionÉ.
Oh, do not ask, ÒWhat is it?Ó
Let us go and make our visit.

SONNET

One of the most famous types of poetry, the sonnet, has been popular with authors from Dante to Shakespeare. A sonnet contains 14 lines, typically with two rhyming stanzas known as a rhyming couplet at the end.

There are several types of sonnets, including:
Italian (also known as Petrarchan)
Spenserian
English or Shakespearean sonnet

Shakespeare, famous for writing more than 150 sonnets (including his popular Sonnet 138 ) is credited with creating for a form of the sonnet that enjoyed widespread popularity throughout England for hundreds of years. Sonnet 138 reads:

When my love swears that she is made of truth
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutor'd youth,
Unlearned in the world's false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false speaking tongue:
On both sides thus is simple truth suppress'd.
But wherefore says she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O, love's best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love loves not to have years told:
Therefore I lie with her and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flatter'd be.

Reading and understanding these types of poems should help you to better analyze poetry that you come across and may even inspire you to write your own creative works.

CONTEMPLATING SUICIDE? DON'T!

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

Deep within, a distressed soul seeks for a way
To heaven, yes. To hell, no! NEVER! So stay
Hey! Tomorrow is often better than today
If Only patience is allowed to hold sway.

THE WORD WRITTEN

... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

Oh how I love the word written
It is nothing but mere thoughts laid out
And a sure proof that a mind thrives
Immortalizing its owner 1000 years beyond

Oh how I cherish the word written
It preys on the eyes that dare reads
Resurrecting mystically to influence
Again and again and again and again

Oh how I adore the word written
How many an idea'd have been lost forever
Countless a diamond in the rough missed
Confucius, Shakespeare, but not The Unlettered

Oh how I value the word written
Its secrets lie in the scrolls, light and open
Beauty, worthy, mighty, depends on the apple
Sure a wonder! Indeed what a pleasurable tea

Oh how I treasure the word written
Time celebrates, then perishes all civilizations
Memories try retentively, alas effort-waste
The word penned or qwerty tales easy

Oh how I rever the word written
Revelations, the physical, the ghaib
Many a layer of darkness, light shreds
"KUN", Al-Qalam, Iqra' Reveals Ar-Rahman

Oh how I'm speechless about the word written!
