WHERE DID WE GO WRONG? (poetry)

.... by Poetic Tee "Here, take a sip"

We went wrong
that very first time
someone committed a crime
and we let go the suspects prime
without insisting they do the time.

We went wrong
with the very first practice
when we rose in defense of injustice
after indulging in a wine 'Sentimentalis'
giving birth to much grudges and malice.

We went wrong
the very first moment
we welcomed thugs with a compliment
questing for their loots with abandonment
now we are enslaved in a rats-infested basement.

We went wrong
first day we looked the other way
when someone hurt was denied a say
families, ethnicity, religion proudly on display
and indulged in the foolishness called "Here-to-stay".

We went wrong
that first second we took for granted
our trust, peace and wealth that others wanted
to enrich themselves, thus sowing sedition and hatred
in grand plans, secretly executed, but God often aborted.

We went wrong
since our sheep first drew close to a wolf
while we got amused playing a game of golf
some even sat down watching the movie 'Beowolf'
waking up to a roof, a genetically-modified rain has blown off.

We went wrong
when we first took that wrong turn
and didn't threaten the driver to make a u-turn
nor did we react when knowing, we were driven in to burn
after a bomb blast, women and children death's now part of the fun.

We went wrong
that first again and the next again
is it not what one has, one will use to bargain?
yet, you and I were told to flush it down the drain
gullibly convinced it'll be better, now we are all in pains, no gain.

All the above and more started it all
The 'selfie' that sowed the seed of the tree
Which has now grown to full strength
The fruits of which are ripe and the shade
We are all sitting under, "enjoying" it's scorchy breeze.

So what needs to be done
Which is the way out, the way forward?
Simple...
CUT DOWN THE TREE!
Uproot it roots, running deep in our psyches.

No, don't burn down our house
As some are want to gleefully suggest
For the problem is not with the structure
But with that devil's tree bearing those fruits
Adam and Eve were of aye warned not to eat thereof.

Agreed, even if we are to destroy our shelter
Share the inheritance fair and square, though we can't
And each carry with it a branch of that dreaded tree
To our new homes, replant and nourish it to full fruition
The circle of grief will surely repeat itself, generations to come.
